Radiant Melody

Schumann's joyous and tuneful Third Symphony 'The Rhenish' was an audience hit in the composer's own time. Evoking the glorious Rhineland, the symphony is an optimistic work to celebrate the bicentenary of Schumann's birth, and the fertile creativity of this imaginative, innovative, romantic spirit.

Benjamin Britten brings masterly inventiveness to a totally different environment - the sea. His interludes from the opera Peter Grimes capture the sea in many different moods; from the flat still calm of noon, where the sun's rays sparkle on rippling waves to the menace of storm and full force of thundering waves, lightning and rain.

Beethoven's Triple Concerto is gracious and lively with uplifting melodies deftly exchanged between the cello, violin and piano soloists.
