Heroism and Grandeur

Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto is powerful and virtuosic. Pianists and audiences have embraced its vibrant, pungent textures and hummable tunes; the work has also slipped into the popular vernacular through use in radio, television, film and the Olympics.

Hindemith is a central figure in 20th century music and his witty refashioning of the music of his German predecessor is full of surprising twists.

Beethoven's Third Symphony introduces the heroic to this program; this symphony holds a powerful position in symphonic repertoire. Its emotional power and originality is groundbreaking, just as its triumphal ending confidently torches the way forward for romantic composers to come.
