Artistic Director / Chief Conductor

Ronald Prussing

Ronald Prussing is one of Australia's leading brass players. He has been a member of the Sydney Symphony since 1980, and has played Principal Trombone all of this time.

Ronald has appeared as soloist on a number of occasions with the Sydney Symphony, and has recorded concertos and other pieces with the Sydney Symphony. He has recorded a highly acclaimed solo album - Classics for Trombone - with the Melbourne Staff Band of the Salvation Army. Ron is a regular recitalist. He was the first Australian trombonist to be invited to present lectures and give recitals at the annual Seminar of the International Trombone Association, held in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ronald has been conjoint lecturer in Trombone at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, and Lecturer in Trombone at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music in Sydney.

Alongside this long and distinguished career as a performer, Ronald has always had a keen interest in conducting. He has conducted many and varied chamber groups, bands and orchestras. He has been constantly in demand to conduct orchestral reading classes and brass and woodwind tutorials as well as orchestral rehearsals and read-through sessions.

During 2006 - 2007, he held the post of Artistic Administrator and Chief Conductor of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, leading that orchestra on a very successful tour of Spain. During his tenure at the SYO, he conducted a wide range of repertoire from such diverse composers as Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Mahler. He also premiered new Australian compositions by Roger Smalley and Peter Sculthorpe. Ronald has conducted the SBS Youth Orchestra for a number of concerts and the Sydney Sinfonia (Sydney Symphony's mentoring orchestra) both in orchestral reading rehearsals and at their extremely popular music education presentations for schools.

Ronald was appointed Artistic Director/Chief Conductor of Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra in July 2009. During 2008 - 2009, he conducted the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra in a Symphony Series concert which included Bruckner's 6th Symphony, the finals concert of the 2009 NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition, Symphony at the Movies family concerts and the community fundraising concert for St Ives Rotary Club in December 2009.

Ronald will conduct Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra in the Symphony Series programs and the finals concert of the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition.
